Gardaí to host local recruitment information event

- KATIE GLAVIN

Gardaí locally are preparing to host a recruitment information event in Mitchelstown next week. News of this comes as this week, the age limit to apply to be a Garda trainee has increased from 35 to 50 years of age.

Fermoy Garda District Community Policing will hold the recruitment information event at The Firgrove Hotel, Mitchelstown on Wednesday, January 24, where serving gardaí will be present to meet with anyone interested in a career in An Garda Síochána.

“You can get an insight into the application process, training and what life on the beat involves. Everyone is welcome and now the age limit for applicants has increased from 35 to 50 years of age,” a spokesperson for Fermoy Garda District Community Policing said.

In order to provide a steady pipeline of Garda trainees over the coming years, it is intended that Garda recruitment campaigns will run annually.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris, has commented previously on the need to not only meet the Government target of 15,000 gardaí, but increase Garda numbers even further due to population growth and the changing nature of crime.

"Being a Garda is a hugely rewarding but at times tough job. As a Garda you will make a real difference in people’s lives. You will effect positive change in communities. You will keep people safe. You will support victims. You will uphold the law. And, through this valued and exciting work, you will see first-hand the impact your actions have on the ground. This is why being a Garda is a job worth doing,” Commissioner Harris said.

In 2023, 746 people commenced training to be a Garda with 388 gardaí graduating. The next group of gardaí to graduate will be in April 2024.

Applications, being accepted until February 8, can be made on publicjobs.ie. The event in Mitchelstown will run from 4pm until 8pm.
