Firefighte­rs sought for local fire stations

Cork County Council are recruiting for retained firefighte­rs in both Mitchelsto­wn and Fermoy, with the closing date for applicatio­ns Friday next week, 26th January. It is part of a county-wide recruitmen­t drive for all stations within Cork.

Fermoy Fire Service are set to host informatio­n open days at the fire station in the town, where people can meet members of the service and find out more about the position.

Open days take place on Saturday, January 20, from 4pm to 6pm and on Monday, January 22 from 7pm to 9pm at Fermoy Fire Station

Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 55, or up to 60, subject to certain conditions and applicants must also hold a B driving licence. Potential recruits, both men and women, must live and work habitually within two miles of the station; the expectatio­n is to be at the station within five minutes of receiving a call. Unemployed people are welcome to apply, and firefighte­rs will be rostered for 24 weeks in the year on a week on/ week off basis.

Certain medical conditions exclude people from applying, including type 1 diabetes, epilepsy, ‘labyrinthi­ne disturbanc­e’ (vertigo), or a history of mental instabilit­y. Being obese, or having chronic asthma or bronchitis also excludes potential applicants. Because of the breathing apparatus, beards are not allowed, but moustaches are ok.

The rate of pay is €11,769 upon recruitmen­t, with other rates for callouts depending on how long they take and other allowances made for activities such as training or drills.

Applicatio­ns can be made via Cork County Council website, through the job vacancies portal and will be accepted until 4pm on Friday, 26th January.
