TII funding needed to fix Patrick Street
Cork County Council hope to be in a position to progress resurfacing works on Patrick Street in Fermoy in Q3 or Q4 of this year, subject to funding.
News of this comes following a motion tabled by the Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Frank O’Flynn, which sought an update and timeframe for the much-needed project.
Sean Callery, of the National Roads Office, outlined that details of Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s 2024 Grant Allocation are still awaited.
“Cork County Council is currently awaiting details of the TII 2024 Grant Allocation which may include funding for the resurfacing of Patrick Street, Fermoy. Subject to confirmation of same, Cork County Council hope to be in a position to progress these works in Q3/ Q4 of 2024,” Mr Callery said.
Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the Fermoy Municipal District, Mayor O’Flynn said that it is ‘very, very disappointing’ to still have not received news of grant funding allocations.
“At the end of the day, this has to be done and I hope that the funding will be put in place. People have been suffering for quite a long time,” Mayor O’Flynn said.
The condition of the road surface on Patrick Street in Fermoy, the town's main thoroughfare, has been on the agenda for quite some time, as Mayor O’Flynn this week echoed previous sentiments, stating that the road is like that of 'a third world country’.
In January of last year, similar calls were extended at the Northern Divisional Committee, for work to be carried out to the road which was described as being in ‘diabolical condition’.
Prior to this, repairs had been carried out on what was described as the ‘worst section’ of the road which stretched from the €2 shop to the courthouse.
Funding at that time was also awaited from TII to see works carried out on the busy N72 via a phased programme of works that were anticipated to commence this year, 2024.
