Works on Cappoquin Regeneration expected by March
Physical works in relation to the Cappoquin Regeneration are expected to begin by March 1, according to Waterford City and County Council officials.
Seeking an update on the works due for the town, Cllr John Pratt sought a timeframe on the matter. In particular, Cllr Pratt sought an update regarding a green area located near the Community Centre and Cois Abhainn estate, which is expected to see development works as part of the plans.
Richie Walsh, of Waterford City and County Council, noting that there are currently about four tenders out in relation to the Cappoquin Regeneration, stated that such tenders are in anticipation of bolstering physical works on about six properties in the public domain, beginning around March 1.
“That’s the most of the significant work that will occur. That also applies to the railway loop walk which is the Cois Abhainn element of things. There will be consultation with all that estate before anything advances there, that will happen in the next couple of weeks,” Mr Walsh said.
In 2022, as the newly refurbished Blackwater House was unveiled in Cappoquin, a total of €5,030,207 was announced towards the regeneration and renewal of the town centre by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, while visiting the west Waterford area.
Denis McCarthy of the Cappoquin Regeneration Company, said at the time that funding would go towards the refurbishment of derelict properties within the town centre to provide residential accommodation over commercial and office premises.
Refurbishment of three townhouses with ancillary mews accommodation at the rear was also outlined, while the area would benefit from public realm enhancements including the removal of derelict buildings and unused lands to provide improved access and car parking.
Buildings to be transformed in the town include the conversion of a former hotel, pub and department store into residential accommodation, as well as ‘over the shop’ living accommodation in the town centre. This is in addition to the renovation of three historic townhouses on the main street.
