The Avondhu

The late Tadhg Drinan RIP

- BY PADDY RYAN

The death occurred on January 11 at Cork University Hospital of Tim (Tadhg) Drinan, Boreenamanna Road, Cork and formerly of Ballyhea. In his late 80s, Tadhg was a true gentleman and was employed at Vita Cortex up to his retirement.

Very well thought of in GAA circles, he was involved with the county Bord na nOg in the 1980s and was a member of St Finbarr's Hurling and Football clubs, promoting juvenile hurling and football for very many years. Also a programme seller and one who promoted the club lotto and other fundraising events, he encouraged children to play with St Finbarr's club and promoted many street leagues. He gave a lifetime of service to the GAA at all levels.

A man of great faith, the Ballyhea native played minor and junior hurling with the Avondhu club. He represented the Ballyhea club at Co Board Juvenile meetings for many years and was vice president Ballyhea GAA Club.

As a member of St Finbarr's Hurling and Football clubs, he used his Nissan Micra to bring many players to training, mainly in Togher. He served as a Cork minor football selector.

Over the years, the late Tadhg was a great speaker at club meetings and also at conventions. Even though he was a great 'Barr's man, he supported all clubs and he had a great willingness to help everyone. He was a great sports reader and liked when match reports contained clubs in inter-divisional and college games. He felt that by stating the club, it gave the players identity.

His dedication and honesty knew no bounds. He had a great knowledge of rules and regulations and was a fountain of information on all GAA matters and an incredible worker for the association. No task was too big for him. He promoted the

Co Board Draw very well and he also acted as a steward, umpire and any other task that was needed.

LARGE TURNOUT

His popularity was borne out by the very large and represented attendance at his funeral on Sunday evening at the funeral home of Jeremiah O'Connor, Boreenamanna Road. There was also a large attendance at the requiem Mass on Monday in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Ballinlough.

Members of the St Finbarr's GAA Club and many others held a guard of honour, as the coffin was draped in the Barr's and Ballyhea colours.

Cremation took place at the Island Crematorium in Ringaskiddy.

To his sister, Margaret Mary, brother, Anthony, sister-in-law, Eilish, brother-in-law, Dan, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, relatives, neighbours, friends and all members in St Finbarr's GAA and Ballyhea GAA Clubs, we tender our sincere sympathy.
