Fermoy cyclists take medals at Irish championships
A big group of young cyclists from the Fermoy Cycling Club travelled to Limerick for the All-Ireland Cyclo-Cross Championships over the weekend, with expectations of bringing home All-Ireland medals.
After having a great winter season, Mia Geary was among the favourites to win the girls under 16 race. She rode very well from the start but due to a fall and mechanical troubles, always a problem in cyclo-cross racing with its rough courses, she finished in 2nd place, a great performance in the circumstances and she collected a silver medal to make the prize winners podium.
Shane O'Brien was our next medal winner, taking the gold medal for 1st in the boys under 15 category and showing great form on the day.
Other Fermoy cyclists, who got close to the medals, but didn't quite make it, include Max McGrath, 6th in the boys under 12 and James Geary, 7th in the boys U14. Also competing on the day were Conor McGrath, under 6; Dan McGrath and Adam Tenys under 10, Aoibhinn Feeney under 10 and Dara Feeney under 12.
LIAM TRAVELS TO SPAIN
Well done to all who competed in the championships.
Liam O'Brien travelled to Spain at the weekend for the final pre-season training camp with the LIDL Trek team, whose development squad he will be competing with in the new professional road racing season, which gets underway shortly.
While the details of his calendar are not yet clear, it is understood that he may be racing in Majorca at the end of January in the Trofeo Majorca 4-day event.
All the best wishes from the Fermoy Cycling Club go to Liam for the start of his season.
