The Avondhu

Breda and Geraldine secure team win

-

The Business Houses Athletics Association of Cork hosted its first race of the year, and as usual it was the cross country 5km held at Beaumont Park, Mahon.

The weather was bright, very cold and frosty around the park, but there was still a great turnout of 180 runners. It’s not an easy course but at least this year the track was somewhat harder due to the frosty conditions.

The first man over the line was Barry Twohig of Emerald Fencing, posting a fantastic time of 17.54, and the first female was Siobhan Hoare of Bon Secours in 21.22, with Avondhu Motor Factors athlete Breda Gaffney 2nd lady home just seconds behind Siobhan in 21.36! Avondhu Motor Factors had three competitors on the day - Breda Gaffney, Geraldine Hartnett (3rd O40 female) and Keith Buckley. Breda and Geraldine went on to take the prestigious A category team 1st place and Keith posted a great time, finishing just outside the prizes.

Congratulations to all competitors, and thanks as always to the BHAA for organising the event. There are plenty of races coming up in the next couple of months, but it seems that all the morning events will commence one hour earlier, at 10am instead of 11am. So we will all have to set the clocks to be sure of arriving on time! We would like to thank Mike and Joan Ennis, Avondhu Motor Factors, for their continued sponsorship.

UPCOMING RACE

The next race, under BHAA rules, is the IFF 5k, on Sunday, 21st January commencing 10am. Registration will be from 8.30am at the Little Island Sports Hall and costs €5 for registered runners, €10 for non-registered.
