HURLING IN BARTLEMY SCHOOL - 1930’S

-

The late Garrett Dooley recalled his ‘sporting’ time in Bartlemy National School in the early 1930s .“At lunchtime we scoffed the lunch in two bites and threw the rest to the crows. We played hurling, we tossed for captains and we tossed for first call for the captains to pick the teams. All the hurleys were made of sticks from the hedges and shaped as best we could with a bill-hook. A lot of players went back to class with cuts on hands and legs and blood flowing. Eventually the master bought us a football. He tried to ensure we spoke Irish only which we did to the very best of our ability –‘Buala, buala’ rang out until at a very tense moment the captain shouted a profanity! The master said ‘that is not in my book’, ‘No sir, it’s the captain’s instructions’ We all paid for it afterwards!
