U18 footballers go down by the narrowest of margins

-

Our U18 footballers travelled to Mourneabbey last Sunday to play Clyda Rovers in our second league match. If there was ever a game of two halves this was it with the weather having a big say in the final outcome.

We played the first half with the wind and played some lovely football considering the conditions. Points from James, Cian, Lachlan, Luke and Harrison and some brilliant defending from our backs and two great saves from our keeper Eoin saw us ahead at the break on a score of Clyda 0-2 Mitchelstown 0-7.

We had, however, three goal chances with the Clyda goalkeeper also pulling off some fine saves. The misses would prove costly in the end. We struggled to hold possession in the second half and this resulted in wave after wave of Clyda pressure. Our backs held firm but were conceding too many frees in scorable positions.

Clyda went a point ahead with five minutes to go and our lads gave everything to get it back level but it was not to be. A fine performance overall but having only two substitutes available and basic mistakes due to tiredness and tough conditions cost us in the end.

It finished Clyda Rovers 0-10 Mitchelstown 0-9. Plenty to work on in training before our next game, at home to Kilshannig on 10th April. We wish a speedy recovery to the English brothers, Cian and Eoin, who sustained injuries over the weekend and hope to see them back soon.

Team and scorers: Eoin Kirwan, Ross Barry, Sean Barry, Ryan Spratt, Clement Motherway, Eoin Brenock, Nathan Coltoan (capt), Harrison Conway (0-1), Jack Hanrahan, James Keane (0-1), Caoimhín O’Gorman, Jack Sheehy, Lachlan Heafey (0-3), Cian English (0-3), Luke Cott (0-1), Anthony Aherne and Simon Whelan.

SCOTT MAKES THE CORK TEAM

Huge congratulations are in order for Scott Kirby of 6th Class CBS Primary, Mitchelstown, who made it through the numerous trials to finally make it onto the Cork Primary Games Hurling team.

Scott will line out with the Cork Primary hurlers at half-time in the Cork vs Waterford game on April 21st. We are all really proud of Scott's achievement and wish him the very best on the day.

AN OPENING WIN FOR BALLYGIBLIN'S U14 HURLERS

Ballygiblin's U14s travelled to Cobh on a wet Sunday evening to kick start their League campaign.

The ball was thrown in, instantly Jason Holland picked up the ball and charged through the Cobh defence and netted the opener for Ballygiblin. From then on Ballygiblin had a steady flow of goals and points throughout the first half from Scott Kirby, Michael Murphy and Jason Holland.

With the second half getting underway, early scores from Brian Walsh and Daire Burke put Ballygiblin in the driving seat, then some late scores coming from Rory McCarthy and Cathal Meade secured a comfortable scoreline for Ballygiblin of 7-9 to 1-1 from Cobh.

The above was written by Michael Murphy aged 13. Well done Michael on a very comprehensive report.
