DHU Matters on immigration and homelessness being raised

-

The issue of immigration is being raised more frequently on the doorsteps in advance of the upcoming elections, according to Lismore LEA candidate, Donnchadh Mulcahy, something which his party has a clear stance on.

“Sinn Féin's position on Immigration is clear. We are opposed to open borders! I believe Ireland needs a well-managed migration system - one that is efficient and rigidly enforced,” according to the Sinn Féin candidate in the Lismore Local Electoral Area.

“All applicants should be strictly vetted, and anybody with a criminal record should not be allowed in. Those who transgress the law in a serious manner while here should be deported! There is a growing feeling out there that immigration is getting out of control. These are genuinely held fears, but many are wary of raising the subject lest they are called racist,” he said. “The Government has signed us up to the EU Asylum and Migrant Pact, which is a mixed bag”.

SOUTH EAST HOMELESS ACTION

Welcoming the recent launch of the South East Homeless Action Plan to tackle homelessness, Mr Mulcahy stated that positive input on the matter was welcome and encouraged those who wish to help to contact him.

“Homelessness and immigration, though related, are not the same issue. Our first duty surely has to be to our own homeless. I recognise also that Waterford City and County Council along with region local authorities and the HSE launched the South East Homeless Action Plan recently in an attempt to address the ongoing problems.

“It's easy to criticise. What I would welcome is constructive input. I plan to launch an initiative shortly which I hope will help in some small way to assist the wonderful work being done by Waterford Helping the Homeless. As I say, positive input is welcome,” he concluded.
