Banteer Community Centre a hive of activity

THE Centre continues to be a hive of activity with numerous events and activities taking place throughout the Complex which incorporat­es the large Community Hall, the indoor Astro Turf Arena, the Gym, and the new community Pitch.

Last year marked the 30th birthday of the Hall which continues to be an invaluable resource to everybody who uses it for a vast range of events and activities.

The Committee recently held a fundraisin­g bingo event on behalf of the local community in aid of the Alex Ott fund with over €3,850 raised for same. The hugely popular Bingo sessions continue each Tuesday night at 8.30pm with a jackpot of €4500 and total prizes of €6,500.

Glen Theatre

The Glen Theatre continues to be the venue of choice for music and drama lovers from all over Cork county and beyond. Family Fever was another runaway success this year for the Drama Group who further showcased their talents at a sell out performanc­e in the Market Place Theatre in Armagh recently. The group will stage a final production of this year’s play which is directed by Con O Keeffe on Friday, May 22nd on their home turf at the Glen Theatre.

Meanwhile the Voice of the Glen competitio­n continues to grow from strength to strength each year. Sponsored by Tadgh O Keeffe and Sons Electrical and Solar panels Ltd., the contest which was won this year by May O Riordan from Mallow continues to be one of the highlights in the Theatre’s social calendar.

It was show time again at the Theatre recently as young actors from Millstreet, Lyre, Banteer, Kanturk, Newmarket, Rathcoole, Ballyhass and Mallow gathered to showcase their talent and their craft under the skilful direction of Elle Lynam of DRAMA!

Banteer Lyre and Districts Community Council nomination­s and elections

The community council have now elected a new council with the first meeting planned for Mon May 18th. The Community Council is an important group within the area and elected members will be involved in various community improvemen­t projects.

IRD Duhallow Public Meeting

On Tuesday, May 26th at 8pm in the Glen Theatre, IRD Duhallow will hold a meeting for the Banteer/Lyre/Nadd/Kilcorney areas where everyone from the business community, community organisati­ons, farming sector, environmen­t groups, sporting organisati­ons, youth and actively retired groups are invited to attend and input regarding the 2014 - 2020 Leader funding programme.
