Council gets funding for N72 works

- BILL BROWNE

FUNDING has been received by Cork County Council for a number of major road improvement projects along the N72 road in north Cork.

The authority has confirmed it has received funding for pavement strengthening works along the arterial route at Killetra, Carrig to Ballygriffin, Lacknamona and at Templenoe.

Council engineer Aidan Weir told councillors at their May northern area meeting that completed contact documents for the works have been submitted to the National Roads Authority (NRA) for approval.

He also pointed out that part of the works would entail the realignment of the dangerous bend at Kilcanway between Mallow and Castletownroche and that land is in the process of being acquired for this.

This was welcomed by Cllr Frank O’Flynn (FF), who asked if a time-frame had been put in place for the project.

“This is a very dangerous bend that has been the scene of a number of accidents over the years. I would like to know when we can expect work to start there,” he said.

Mr Weir replied that the NRA was in negotiations to buy the land need to move the project forward and it would go to tender once this process had been completed.

“This process is an advanced stage and we are confident the project will be completed within the current year,” he said.
