Has Granny Griffin got the best scone in the land?
THERE’S nothing like a good scone and now two Cork cafes have been shortlisted for Ireland’s Best Scone
Granny Griffin’s Garden Centre Cafe in Drispey and Fitzpatrick’s Shop, situated in Glounthaune, have been recommended by their customers as the places where you can enjoy Ireland’s Best Scone and the two will now be competing against eight other businesses for the national title.
Ireland’s Best Scone, run by Goodall’s and Odlums, has been running for four years and year-on-year, the competition has increased in terms of both nominations and votes. It’s now over to the public and a select judging panel to decide which establishment is the proud owner of Ireland’s Best Scone!
Owned and run by Margaret Griffin, Griffins Garden Centre Cafe is well known across the region. Asked what makes their scones so special, Margaret Griffin said: “Unashamedly traditional and wholesome, Granny Griffins’ scones are baked with love using local, quality produce and traditional methods.
“Nostalgic is the word that comes to mind when people first taste our Granny Griffins’ scones.”
In addition to staying true to the traditional fruit and brown scones, at Griffin’s new varieties are created daily. “And we source local produce such as our honey, which is produced by an artisan honey supplier across the road,” added Margaret.
In Glounthane, Fitzpatrick’s is a family business established in 1942. “When our shop first began making scones my grandmother made them in her kitchen and still to this day I use her original recipe,” said proprietor Kerri O’Neill.
From Monday next, May 25, until Friday, June 5, you can vote for your favourite café on the Goodall’s website with the public vote accounting for 50% of the overall score. “Every vote counts so support for your local café by registering your note on www.goodalls.ie,” said Goodall’s brand manager David Egan. .
Ireland’s Best Scone will be announced at a celebratory high tea for finalists in Dublin’s Merrion Hotel.
