GAA REPORTS

Senior Football Championship Clyda Rovers 0-8 Carbery Rangers 1-7

For the second weekend running, Clyda participated in the Senior football championship. This weekend the game was played in Coachford against Carbery Rangers. The day was dry but a strong wind was to prevail for the entire sixty minutes of the contest. Clyda Rovers chose to play with the wind in the opening half.

Clyda started the better and some good work by Sean O’ Connell saw a pass to Cian O’ Sullivan who was pulled down and the resulting free was put over the bar by James Murphy on the second minute mark. Carbery replied then with two points of their own on the fourth and the fifth minute.

Then a long run from deep saw Ray Carey move the ball to James Murphy who added to his tally and brought the score to two points apiece. On twelve minutes a long ball in to Dan O’ Callaghan who was proving a handful in the full forward line saw him win a free for Clyda. Conor Flanagan took the free kick and placed it between the posts.

Moments later another high ball sent in to the forwards was again won by Dan O’ Callaghan who turned to shoot but his shot was deflected out for a ’45 which was converted by James Murphy. Again on the eighteen minute mark the duo of Sean O’ Connell and Cian O’ Sullivan combined again and this time Cian scoring his first point of the game.

Our defence was then tested and a great block by Ray Carey saw a Carbery attack break down, the loose ball was picked up by another Carbery man but Niall O’ Mullane forced the player wide. On the twenty second minute Carbery scored their third point of the game and it was to remain at that till half time with Clyda leading 0-5 to 0-3.

Clyda’s tactics changed in the second half due to the very strong wind they were playing against and they tried to retain procession as much as possible. This was frustrating their opponents and after five minutes Conor Flanagan was judged to have been harshly tackled and the resulting free was scored by James Murphy.

Then the game was to be turned on its head after Carbery scored two quick points, and then an intercepted Clyda pass saw the ball break into the square, from this viewers vantage point then it seemed that Ray Carey was then fouled but that wasn’t to matter, as a Carbery forward poked the ball home beyond the reach of Conor O’ Donoghue.

Now Carbery were leading 1-5 to 6 points. Cian O’ Sullivan popped up again and found himself in space after some intelligent running and took a good point from the right hand side at a tight angle to reduce the deficit to the minimum. On twenty minutes Dan O’ Callaghan forced the Carbery defence in to an error and Clyda’s Conor Flanagan scored the resulting free to bring it back to level. Carbery now using the wind replied almost instantly with a point of their own and scored one more on the thirty minute mark to close out the game.

A tough result on the Clyda men after some top class displays on the day. Ray Carey and Paudie Kissane showed why they have All Ireland awards with some brilliant football and dogged determination right throughout the game, whilst some of the newer playing members, Sean Ronayne and Ronan Flanagan showed that the future looks strong for Clyda, just to mention some of the many fine performances.

Team: Conor O’ Donoghue, Chris Kenny, Ray Carey, Sean Ronayne, Roy Willis, Paudie Kissane, Niall O’ Mullane, Kenneth Fitzgerald, Conor Flanagan, Gavin Carey, James Murphy, Cian O’ Sullivan, Ronan Flanagan, Dan O’ Callaghan, Sean O’ Connell. Scorers: James Murphy 0-4( 2f, 1 ’45 ), Cian O’ Sullivan 0-2, Conor Flanagan 0-2(f)

Division 2 Football League – Clyda Rovers 1-5 Buttevant 2-12

Clyda and Buttevant faced each other on a near Winter’s night in Mourneabbey on Monday last in Division 2 of the Avondhu Football League. Buttevant, playing into a strong wind, started better and got a three early points on the board before Clyda responded with a point from James Buckley who showed great tenacity to work his way into a scoring position after Darragh Walsh won a great ball at the back.

Then Conor Roche got two great points from the right corner and Cian Conway put Clyda in front after a great clearance from Gearoid O’Shea. Buttevant then got two pints either side of another Conor Roche classic, to leave the sides level at half time, 5 points each.

On the changeover Buttevant, now playing with the wind, upped the pace and after an early goal got further points to go 1-10 to 0-5 in front. Then came Clyda’s best movement of the game when a series of passes ended in substitute Diarmuid O’ Shea winning a high ball on the edge of the square before burying it into the back of the net. Buttevant ‘s response was swift. They claimed possession from the kick out before working the ball up field and hit the net again.

As the weather continued to deteriorate, Buttevant finished strongly, winning by 2-12 to 1-5. Impressive for Clyda were James Buckley and Sean O’Connor in defence, the hard working Diarmuid Ronayne and Tim Buckley at midfield, with Conor Roche in rich scorning form up front. Next up for Clyda is the Junior A Football championship against Liscarroll.
