VILLAGERS HEAD POSSE OF BANDS COMING TO TOWN

-

A NUMBER of top Irish and international acts are set to grace the stages of Cork venues over the coming weeks.

On Saturday night Villagers will take to the stage of the Cork Opera House fresh from the release of their hugely anticipated third album ‘Darling Arithmetic.’

The follow-up to Conor O’Brien’s debut ‘Becoming a Jackal’, and its successor ‘Awayland’ – both hugely acclaimed and Mercury-nominated – it is a breathtakingly beautiful, intimate album entirely about love and relationships.

‘Darling Arithmetic’ was written, recorded, produced and mixed by O’Brien at home – the loft of a converted farmhouse that he shares in the coastal town of Malahide to the north of Dublin. Revealing a single-minded artist at the peak of his already considerable songwriting powers, it encompasses the various shades of feeling – desire, obsession, lust, loneliness and confusion, and delves deeper into philosophical and existential territory, across a cast of lovers, friends, family and even strangers.

British singer/songwriter Tom Baxter will be back in Cork on Tuesday, June 2 when he plays a gig amid the intimate surroundings of the newly reopened Pavilion on Carey’s Lane.

The man who co-wrote the modern day classic ‘Better’, which has become entwined into the fabric of so many people’s lives, has garnered broad appeal over the years, not only as a dexterous musician but also for the manner in which he wears his heart on his sleeve and connects with audiences.

Genre defying Scottish band Mogwai will make their Cork debut on Wednesday, June 17 with a gig at the Cork Opera House.

Formed in 1995, Mogwai have recorded nine studio albums, the latest of which ‘Rave Tapes’ released in 2014 entered the UK charts at number 10.

That the band has evolved its sound and instrumentation over the past two decades is no more evident than on ‘Rave Tapes’, an album packed with pulsating synths layer over ‘Kraut-Rock’ textures and vocoder-drenched lyrics.

Fresh from the release of their latest critically acclaimed album ‘Once More Around The Sun’ heavy rock icons Mastodon will play the Savoy Theatre on Saturday, June 27.

The album was recorded in Nashville by Grammy Award winning producer Nick Raskulinecz, who has also worked on albums by Rush, Deftones, Foo Fighters and Alice In Chains.

It is the follow up to ‘ The Hunter, which entered the Billboard charts at number 10 and received raves reviews in US and UK magazines including Rolling Stone, Kerrang and Revolver.
