Exciting new departure for Vanburgh Quartet
THE Vanburgh Quartet will première its latest project entitled ‘Crossings’ at the Ionad Cultúrtha in Ballyvourney on Friday evening at 8.30pm.
Crossings marks a new and fascinating departure for the Ireland’s leading string quartet as it will see them perform a suite of new collaborations with contemporary composers and traditional performers demonstrating its virtuosity and versatility.
Collaborators will include Niall Valley who will perform a new composition ‘ through-other’ with the quartet, while Iarla O’Lionard will join them to perform works by Linda Buckley including ó íochtar mara (from ocean’s floor), a song-cycle based upon Gaelic love poetry of love and loss, elements of which date back to the seventh century.
The concert will also feature Sean Doherty’s string quartet No3 (The Devil’s Dream) and Dave Flynn’s ‘ The Cranning’
Musicians Shane Keating (uilleann pipes), Breffni Horgan (fiddle) and Mairead Carey (flute) will accompany on the evening.
Crossings signifies the start of a new chapter in the life of the Vanburgh Quartet as its takes up its new role of Artists In Residence at UCC having left the RTÉ stable of orchestras last year.
It also highlights their support and commitment to inspired musical performance by future generations of Irish musicians and composers.
Tickets for the performance are available from the venue on 026 45733 priced at €20.
