The Corkman

No cup joy for Fermoy soccer team

-

The Fermoy junior squad travelled to Ringmahon Park in Cork on last Wednesday night where they had a date with their Div. One League rivals Riverstown/Brooklodge in the final of the John Hayes Cup.

As it happened this game represented the club’s last chance of gaining some silverware as this game was about to bring down the curtain on the club’s playing activities at adult level at least for this season.

However, despite a very good start by the Fermoy side they were really outgunned by the East Cork side, especially during a ten minute spell midway through the first half when they scored three times to earn an interval lead of 3-0, despite the fact that Fermoy were denied a goal just before the interval for an offside infringement.

Fermoy battled hard all through the second period and applied most of the pressure, however the Riverstown/ Brooklodge side again scored the only goal of the second half late in the game to run out winners on 4-0 scoreline.

This Fermoy team were also pipped by a single point for second place and a promotion spot in Division One of the MSL Junior section.

The club’s senior team had been going well also but a sudden loss of form towards the end of the season cost them their chance of promotion to the Premier Division.

So both teams finished well up the tables and they can now relax and look forward with confidence to next August again.
