Tricky county IHC mission for Meelin against Dripsey
AFTER a three year lapse, Meelin renew rivalry against Dripsey in the opening round of the County IHC with a clash in Banteer on Saturday evening.
Both sides attempt to revive the memories of a none too distant past culminating on epic marches and wonderful All Ireland JAHC titles, Dripsey winners in 2008 followed by a win for Meelin in 2011.
When the sides clashed in 2012, Meelin claimed a 1-15 to 0-9 victory at the initial hurdle where the industry of Denis O’Riordan, William Murphy and Brendan O’Sullivan shone through with John Forrest ever effective in attack.
However Meelin have found it difficult to make steady inroads, last season’s first round win over Aghabullogue followed by a seven point defeat to bogey opponents Aghada. Ironically, Meelin have looked to one of Aghada’s greats Ronan Dwane for guidance this season.
Consistent performances sees Meelin operate in Division 1 to the County HL. But from five games played this season, a draw against Blarney and a win over Bandon has been followed by three losses.
Opponents Dripsey have emerged great battlers to retain their intermediate status in the past few years. Losing out to Grenagh, Aghabullogue and Fr. O’Neills last season, they reserved their best performance to down St. Catherines in a relegation playoff.
Current league form from Division 3 is mixed though two wins from four starts over neighbours Grenagh and Aghabullogue will act as encouraging.
From the current formbook, Meelin and Dripsey hold ample room for improvement. Whatever side displays an appetite for championship fare is sure to advance.
Meelin operating two divisions above Dripsey in the league will be entitled to the favourites tag to negotiate Saturday’s hurdle otherwise it will take a backdoor meeting against Milford.
Lismire return quickly to the County JBHC on a clash against Belgooly at Mourneabbey though the scheduled date of this Thursday evening is likely to change.
