Busy September at the Briery Gap

GREAT MONTH OF COMEDY, MUSIC AND CINEMA AHEAD

- BILL BROWNE

THE Briery Gap Cultural Centre in Macroom is set for a busy September with an exciting variety of live shows and cinema screenings taking place at the venue during the month.

On Saturday night Ireland’s ‘Ambassador of Comedy’, the inimitable Conal Gallen will bring his hilarious ‘A Laugh and a Laugh’ show to the centre.

The more than two-hour show is packed with jokes, stories and songs that promise to leave the audience in stitches.

After 25-years of entertaining audiences around the world, Gallen has perfected the art of comedy with songs including ‘ The 50 Shades’, ‘Horse it into ya Cynthia’ and ‘Anna from Buncrana’.

Gallen has proved time and time again why he is Ireland’s funniest man with his side-splitting brand of mirth.

On Friday September 18 the Briery Gap will roll out the red carpet for the welcome return to the venue of one Ireland’s most popular contemporary trad music duos.

Macroom’s own Jim Murray is one of the country’s finest guitarists with a formidable reputation as a trad musician – both as a melody player and an accompanist.

Accordion player and singer Séamus Begley is the quintessential Irish musician, an eager storyteller known for his sharp wit and famous for pumping out tune after tune.

In 2001 the pair came together to release their first album, the critically acclaimed ‘Ragairne’ which won the Hot Press Magazine Folk and Trad Album of the Year and The Irish Times Traditional Album Of The Year.

Over the intervening years the pair have enjoyed a successful partnership and are much in demand on the live circuit.

On Saturday, September 26 the Abracadabra School for creative Kids will bring their wonderful ‘Magic Garden’ show to the Macroom venue.

The 50-minute interactive matinee show will take the little ones on joyous voyage of discovery as they join a little girl in her garden surrounded by beautiful butterflies.

Children will be invited to move, sing and interact, sharing ideas and becoming characters within the performance.

Later on that night Duhallow singer Annmarie O’Riordan will take to the stage of the venue.

Annmarie’s wonderfully distinctive singing voice has become superbly recognisable not only at national level here in Ireland but increasingly on a much wider international scale.

In between these gigs the Briery Gap will be screening a number of movies including ‘Far From the Maddening Crowd’, ‘Wild Tales’ and ‘Age of Adaline’.
