City set to buzz on Friday night
AS Ireland’s second city, Cork has always prided itself on being every bit as attractive to visitors as the capital with hidden and not so hidden gems dominating the skyline and around almost every street corner.
For Culture Night 2015 Cork City Council is orchestrating more than 200 events at over 100 venues across the city and has invited people to celebrate the city’s colourful culture by bike, bus or on foot.
While the full list of events is far too exhaustive to include in a single article, below is just a favour of some of the highlights across a range of categories.
The sound of beautiful music will be seeping out from the walls of venues across the city, with the Sounds From a Safe Harbour festival being one of the stand-out events.
Curated by Bryce Dresner of The National, the festival will incorporate gigs featuring This Is How We Fly, Donal Dineen, Mina Tindle and Lisa Hanigan taking place at venues across the city.
The Lee Session Trad Trail will take people on a musical journey across the city, with people able to sample the delights of some of its best know pubs along the way.
The auditorium at City Hall will be busy throughout the day with workshops followed by a performance of ‘A Journey from Mountain to Sea’, comprising of excerpts from Vaughan Williams ‘Fantasia’.
The Camden Palace Hotel will hold an exhibition of Rory Gallagher memorabilia with churches and sacred spaces around the city hosting a variety of recitals.
Libraries, colleges and schools across the city will be busy playing host to exhibitions, workshops and concerts, while the City and County Archives will be offering guided tours of their Blackpool building at 6.30pm and 7pm.
The city’s rich and vibrant culinary scene will be celebrated through a series of mouth-watering events with the world famous English Market open for business late into the night, tours and beer tasting at The Franciscan Well and evening of art, music and food at the Gulpd Café and Plugd Records in the Triskel Centre.
A series of guided walks and tours will traverse the city across the whole of Friday taking in some of Cork’s landmark buildings including the City Gaol, Elizabeth Fort, The Lifetime Lab, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and the UCC Visitor’s Centre.
