Rockchapel ladies are celebrating title win

- MARIA HERLIHY

IN the space of six days, two cups have made their way to Rockchapel of which one is a treasured county championship.

A strong and determined St Peter’s made their way to the Macroom on Saturday where they took on the Bantry Blues in the junior 13 aside championship cup.

With the league title just days earlier snapped up by the hardy Duhallow ladies, all eyes were now set on the county title.

The score board always tells the final story and with St Peters having nabbed 5-12 to Bantry Blues 2-8, there was only one thing for it – celebrate.

Captain Mairin Stack was duly raised in the air and later on when back on home ground a parade was held in the village where the two cups were proudly displayed.

During the speeches in the hall, tribute was paid to the trainer Mike Carroll and selectors Jerome Murphy, Finbarr Murphy and Liam Collins.

Captain Mairin Stack told The Corkman they were “over the moon” at their win.

However, she did point out it has been a long tough year as they started indoor training in January.

“We had dedication and commitment all year and a lot of sacrifices were made,” she said.

“But, we are overjoyed with the outcome. The parish really got behind us from going to the games to putting up signs of support, it all meant a lot,” she said.

As it was a long and tough year, particulary since they were training for quite a bit of time, she said the entire team were “determined that this would be our year,”

During the speeches in the hall, there was some singing as the parish turned up to welcome their heroes home.

Equally so, there was a shout out of how they would “rock it tonight in the rock,” and the parish duly complied.
