Pacteau to appeal severity of sentence for Karen’s murder

- MARIA HERLIHY

THE convicted murderer Alexander Pacteau will appear in the Scottish appeal court next month, in his attempt to have his sentence reduced for the murder of Mourneabbey native, Karen Buckley.

In September, Alexander Pacteau (21) was jailed for 23 years after he bludgeoned her to death following a night out in Glasgow on April 12 last. Within 40 minutes of killing her, be brought her body back to his flat where he hid her in his bedroom before going to sleep.

He then attempted to dispose of the 24 year-olds body in a plastic barrel which he had filled with caustic chemicals.

At his trial, Judge Lady Rae said he had carried out a “brutal, senseless and motiveless attack on a defenceless young woman.”

The Glasgow native, who police say was a “cold, calculated killer”, has now lodged papers at the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh, in a bid to reduce his sentence.

His case will be heard in front of three appeal judges on December 4.

Karen grew up on a farm at Glynn, Mourneabbey, in north Cork. She was John and Marion Buckley’s only daughter. She had three older brothers - Brendan (32), Kieran (28) and Damien (27).

Outside the court, her father John Buckley and his wife, Marion said: “He is truly evil and we hope he spends the rest of his life behind bars.”
