O’Flynn’s stock continuing to rise
DANNY O’Flynn star continues to rise after giving another masterclass of midfield hurling last Saturday as his Charleville side brushed aside fellow north Cork side Mallow.
Despite the talented hurler failing to complete the game, being substituted on 52 minutes after receiving a heavy blow to the leg, O’Flynn was still beaming from ear to ear as Captain Michael O’Flynn made his acceptance speech.
“It is a great reward for all the effort put in by all the lads this season. This is a real talented bunch of lads, a real young team and we have been banging away for the last few years together.
“We had our tough days and last year’s loss to Fermoy in the final of the Intermediate was a real tough one for us but they often say you need to lose one before you win one, I don’t know if that is true or not but the loss really drove us on.
“The win over Dripsey was huge to us and today is another big step. Mallow are a great side and played really well in the premier this season. We will need to compete with sides like Mallow next season and today is a good marker of what we can do.”
O’Flynn has been one of the stars in the intermediate grade for the last few years with his influence on Charleville this season leading to speculation that a call up to the Cork senior set-up may not be too far away.
“Of course it would be a great honour to get the call but I have heard nothing. I will keep giving my all for Charleville and if the call comes it comes. I am like every player here today, we all would love to get that call but unfortunately it doesn’t come for the majority. You have to keep doing your best for your club and keep improving your own game and hopefully the day will come.”
Danny took a break to travel in the middle of this season however it is unlikely he will do the same next.
“I travelled a bit this summer so I kind of had two seasons. Had to get a bit of extra training sessions in but fortunately it all worked out at the end. We will go at it again next January but for now the break is well deserved for all.”
Next season O’Flynn and his colleagues will face a host of local opposition as the PIHC has a very strong north Cork representation, a fact the influential number eight feels will make for a great championship.
“Next year there will be the likes of Kanturk, ourselves, Mallow and Fermoy all in the premier with other big clubs also there which means that there are going to be some really good games next season.”
