Millstreet bowler takes O’Mahony title
BANTEER based bowling club Denis Horgan remembered a great Duhallow sporting legend on Millstreet bowler Danny Murphy collecting the inaugural John O’Mahony Memorial Trophy after capturing the inter club league.
The competition acknowledges a larger than life character, former Cork senior footballer Johnny O’Mahony had a word for everyone and a wonderful rapport with all age groups.
Leaving behind a record of a lifetime of immense achievements both on and off the football pitch, Johnny held an incredible passionate interest about sport and regularly recounting his playing days and team management with Cork, Duhallow, Kanturk and other clubs.
Holding an interest in other sports from bowling to basketball and handball ensured a fistful of memories to savour. Johnny’ sheer consistency and inter-county level was matched by impeccable sportsmanship
Spokesman for the Denis Horgan club Donal Cashman stated Johnny was a tireless worker and no matter what game, that loyalty, dedication and sheer love for sport remained steadfast and a source of inspiration for others to follow.
“Despite all his fame and acclaim though, he was a modest and unassuming man. Johnny served the community in many facets, always in a quiet and dignified manner. The Bowling club decided to recognise Johnny and offer a trophy for the club league,” he said.
On doing so, Millstreet’s Danny Murphy maintained a consistent run all season to claim a popular victory and receive the trophy from Theresa O’Mahony at a presentation at Moll Carthy’s Bridge Bar.
“I’m thrilled to win the inaugural Johnny O’Mahony Trophy, a great ambassador of sport in Duhallow and beyond,” he said.
