MINOR LEAGUE FINAL

Clyda Rovers 2-18 Kildorrery 2-11 (AET, 1-11 2-08 after 60 mins): The Minor hurling league final was played on a very cold but dry night in Mourneabbey on Saturday night last. The championship finalists met again and a thrilling match was served up by the contestants yet again.

Clyda got off to the better staff with Colin Kelly opening the score with a point from a sixty five. Moments later following a great run by Matthew McEntee who skilfully sent the ball in behind the defenders which was met by William Cronin who pulled first time sending the ball into the Kildorrery net.

Kildorrery got their first score with a point after eight minutes. Matthew McEntee then forced a Kildorrery man to over carry and Colin Kelly scored the resulting free and another one moments later. Kildorrery were now starting to come in to the game more and some good defending by Daniel Fitzpatrick was followed up by a great save from Conor Roche who deflected a one on one opportunity over the bar for a point.

Gareth O’ Hanlon then showed some great skill by catching a difficult ball out of the air, turning and slotting over the bar from wide on the right hand side. Colin Kelly added another free on the twenty minute mark and at this stage Clyda were leading 1-5 to 0-2. Kildorrery dominated the remainder of the half scoring 1-03 in the last ten minutes of the half, Clyda’s only response was a free from James Buckley. Clyda leading at the break 1-06 to 1-05.

Kildorrery started the second half the brighter scoring a point in the first minute which was followed up very shortly by a goal. Colin Kelly scoring another pointed free for Clyda between the Kildorrery scores which had been won by James Buckley. Colin continued with his fine free taking display on the seventeenth minute with another point and another on the twentieth after Tim Buckley won the free.

Kildorrery scored another point on the twentieth second minute to bring them back level. The backs were now under constant pressure and Tim Buckley and Ronan Flanagan showed some great character clearing ball after ball. And it was Ronan who was instrumental in Clyda’s next score when he found Colin Kelly with a delicate pass who slotted it over to give Clyda the lead in the dying moments of the game. Kildorrery replied with a score of their own to bring the game in to extra time. The final score after sixty minutes was 1-11 to 2-08.

The first period of extra time was dominated by Kildorrery who scored three points from play. Despite being under pressure however Clyda managed to get two points at either end of the period. The first was scored from a 65’ by Colin Kelly, after some great work from Matthew McEntee. Matthew had a fine shot on goal defected out for the sixty after he ran at the Kildorrery defence. The second point came from Colin also in the dying moments of the half from a free.

The second period opened with a point from Conor Roche who was now operating at centre forward having been replaced in goal by Mark O’ Sullivan. Then William Cronin picked up a breaking ball and quickly slotted it over the bar. Conor Roche scored his second from a free James Buckley was fouled. Then James who had been working tirelessly in the middle of the field all night scored his second of the game from out on the wing.

Clyda were now well and truly dominating the half and when Conor Roche dropped a long ball in to the square William Cronin was quickest to react and hit the net for the second time in the night. Clyda closed the scoring of the game with a final point from a free from Colin Kelly. Clyda deserved winners on the night but credit must also be given to Kildorrery for providing a top class contest for the full ninety minutes. Final score 2-18 to 2-11. The winner’s trophy was presented to the winning Clyda captain James Buckley after the game.
