Turmeric Golden Milk: A Natural Antiinflammatory
Turmeric is an Asian spice with amazing anti-inflammatory properties. It’s used in cooking where it gives rice and curries a lovely rich golden hue. Its flavour is slightly bitter. As well as its anti-inflammatory properties, Turmeric helps support the liver, digestion, and some sources suggest that it is helpful for memory.
It’s the current big thing, especially turmeric milk which is traditionally drunk on a daily basis for its anti-inflammatory properties. Not everyone will choose this option but it tastes great and it is a much more cost effective way compared to supplements.
The milk is extremely easy to make. But be careful with the powder because it will stain everything that it comes in contact with.
Conditions that it can help with include any kind of arthritis, but in particular rheumatoid, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, tendonitis or any joint pain. It will also aid sleep and it’s being used to help with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema.
First you need to make a paste and from this paste you make the milk. Ingredients to make the paste: ½ Cup of water; ¼ Cup of turmeric powder; ¾ Teaspoon of black pepper (this enhances the anti-inflammatory effect of the turmeric)
Simply add all of the ingredients to a saucepan. Bring the heat up but not to boil the mix. Gently heat it and keep stirring for 7-9 minutes. If the paste starts to get too thick too quickly add more water – you want the thickness of a nice thick custard Once it’s ready, transfer to a glass container and let it cool before storing in the fridge for up to three weeks.
Now you can make your mug of milk from the paste. Simply warm some milk of your choice and depending on your level of inflammation you can take half to one teaspoon once or twice a day. You can also add the paste to yoghurt, curries, soups, rice or eat it straight from the spoon. A table spoon of good quality omega oil can be added for extra anti-inflammatory properties.
All you have to do now is sit back and relax with a pleasant cup of anti-inflammatory turmeric milk. Enjoy.
