Taxing time for Mallow defaulters

TWO tax defaulters from Mallow have between them handed over a combined total of more than €140,000 in settlement­s to the Revenue Service

Mallow Contract Ltd, a landfill site contractor with an address in Burnfort, and publican Bertie Hickey of Farankeal, Knockgriff­in, were included on the latest Revenue defaulters list.

Mallow Contract Ltd was hit with a €106,870.64 bill, while Mr Hickey made a settlement of €36,563.

They were among seven settlement­s from the north and mid- Cork areas included on the list, the largest of which was a €502,000 bill handed to Sean and John Barry of Garravagh Inniscarra.

A BARBER with an address Rathcormac has handed over more than €480,000 in settlement­s to the Revenue according to the latest list of tax defaulters released by the service.

Hussein Hassan Kaoun with an address at 4 Pairc Na Greine, Rathcormac was among seven settlement­s from the north and mid Cork areas included on the tax defaulters list for the threemonth period commencing January 1, 2016 to March 31.

Mr Kaoun, whose occupation was listed by the Revenue as a barber, made a total settlement of €484,536.69, which included tax of €235,594.18 and combined interest and penalties of €248,942.41.

The settlement was made in relation to the under declaratio­n of VAT, income tax and PAYE/ PRSI on foot of a revenue audit investigat­ion with the penalty element of the settlement determined by the court.

At €502,000 the largest of the seven settlement­s was made by Sean and John Barry of Garravagh, Inniscarra whose occupation was listed as service station/convenienc­e store operators, following a revenue investigat­ion into the under declaratio­n of VAT.

The total consisted of €330,000 in tax with a further €172,000 in combined interest and penalties.

MJ McGrath Ltd (in liquidatio­n) a Watergrass­hill based electrical/telecommun­ications service contractor made a settlement of €417,318, including tax of €292,541 and interest/penalties of €124,777 in relation to under declaratio­n of VAT, corporatio­n tax and PAY/PRSI.

Florence Geaney, a farmer with an address at Ballinabor­tagh, Carrignava­r made a settlement totalling €355,367, including interest/penalties of €165,35, in relation to the under declaratio­n of capital gains tax.

A settlement of €87,475 was made by K Cowhig Engineerin­g Ltd of Garrynoe, Fermoy, including interest/penalties of €32,276, for the under declaratio­n of PAYE/PRSI and corporatio­n tax.

There were two defaulters with Mallow addresses on the list, Mallow Contract Ltd a landfill site contractor from Burnfort (under declaratio­n of VAT) and publican Bertie Hickey with an address at Farankeal, Knockgriff­in (under declaratio­n of income tax).

Mallow Contract Ltd was hit with a €106,870.64 bill, including interest/penalties of €28,015.53. Mr Hickey’s total of €36,563 included interest/ penalties of €10,391.

The Revenue Service revealed that a total of 100 settlement­s were made during the three-month period in question totalling €24,702,093.98.

Three of these, including settlement of €7 million made by a Dublin company director, were for amounts exceeding €1million, six for sums above €500,000 and 52 for amounts of more than €100,000.

Nine of the published settlement­s, yielding €9.2 million, related to the Revenue’s investigat­ion into offshore assets/funds.
