Millstreet is to finally get pedestrian crossing

- MARIA HERLIHY

FUNDING has been ring-fenced for a pedestrian crossing in Millstreet which will “help the entire town,” and will cost €40,000.

At the Kanturk-Mallow municipal district meeting which was held at the Edel Quinn Hall in Kanturk for the first time, a presentation was made by John Lapthorne, senior engineer at CCC on the proposed pedestrian at Coomlogane in the town.

Mr Lapthorne told the meeting that the construction of the crossing would require part eight planning and should it be approved it is hoped that the council would full support it. It is hoped that works would begin and the project would be finalised by November.

He said the pedestrian crossing would provide far more road safety especially for the two schools on either side of the road. It would equally help the infirm and he said the school warden’s position would not be affected.

He also said new public lighting is proposed on the northern side of the road.

Chairing the meeting, Cllr Bernard Moynihan (FF) said it was a very welcome development. “This will be invaluable for the people in the town and in particular it will give more safety to people,” he said.

Cllr John Paul O’Shea (Ind) said the issue of a proposed pedestrian crossing has been a “long standing issue” in the town. He also complimented local engineer, Pat O’Sullivan for his input on the project.

Cllr Timmy Collins (Ind) said this pedestrian was very much in the interest of people’s safety and it was badly needed. Cllr Melissa Mullane (SF) said it was a fantastic idea.

Cllr Moynihan said it was fantastic to hear that funding is in place as so many times projects are spoken about and going ahead but then no money is in the kitty.

Cllr Gerard Murphy (FG) said this request for a pedestrian crossing in Millstreet has been “a long standing request.”

He said his former FG colleague, Noel Buckley, who is chairman of the local community association would no doubt be over the moon at this good news, as he also worked very hard for many years to get a crossing in place.
