MOYNIHAN MEMORIAL
On Sunday, June 26, a memorial to the memory of volunteer Bernard Moynihan will be unveiled at Con S Murphy’s Bridge in Rathcoole which is just 200 yards from the spot where he was shot by British Forces on Saturday, June 30,1921.
Bernard Moynihan was in fact born in America and his family returned to Ireland in 1907, first to Carriganima and later they settled at a farm in Shanakiel Kilcorney where Bernard Moynihan attended Kilcorney National School, being first register on September 20,1909, and being enrolled in first class. Bernard who was just 19 at the time of his death had been a member of the Rathcoole Irish Volunteer Company since it was formed in 1918. By the time of his death he was a veteran of local volunteer activity having taken part in many actions against British forces. On the day of his killing he was not on active service but in fact was saving hay with his neighbours, despite the British military response to his killing which stated that a bomb had been thrown at one of their trucks on Rathcoole Bridge.
The commemoration on June 26 will begin with Mass at Rathcoole School at 12.30 p.m. followed by a parade to the monument site. The parade will include members of the local reserve force (LRF), Millstreet Pipe Band, local school children, and national flag bearing party. It is also hoped that people who are in possession of old IRA Medals will bring them along and march on the day. A lot of work has been put into the planning of this historic event by the local committed under the chairmanship of Connie Foley and Secretary Dan Joe O’Keeffe and it is hoped to see as many people as possible on the day. It is the hope of the committee that the Bernard Moynihan memorial will stand forever to remind passers-by of the sacrifices of others for the freedom we enjoy today.
