American legal eagles talk of murder in Cork
A LIMITED number of tickets are still available for what promises to be a fascinating night of conversation at the Cork Opera House in the company of two of the world’s most recognisable legal eagles.
American defence attorneys Dean Strang and Jerry Buting, will take to the stage of the Cork Opera House in September to talk about the court case that earned them worldwide fame.
The Wisconsin attorneys worked alongside each other on Steven Avery’s defence during his trial for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.
‘Making a Murderer’ the Netflix documentary about Avery’s trial, which took place four years after he was released from jail having spent 19-years behind bars for a crime he did not commit, became a global phenomenon watched by millions of viewers.
After his release Avery filed a lawsuit against Manitowic County and several individuals involved in his arrest.
The hugely compelling argument Strang and Avery made on behalf of Avery during his murder trial, claiming he was set up by the authorities of Manitowic County, earned the pair widespread global notoriety elevating them to cult hero status.
Despite their defence of Avery he was found guilty of murdering Halbach and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
However, ‘Making a Murderer has been praised for the manner in which it highlighted flaws in the American justice system, something that the pair will discuss during two public discussion events in Cork and Galway later on this year.
They will take the form of moderated discussions on the systematic failures of the US criminal justice system and the broader implications of the Steven Avery case.
Tickets for ‘A Conversation with Dean Strang and Jerry Buting ’at the Cork Opera House on September 22 are available from www.eventbrite.ie priced at €32.
