Nora’s ‘constant efforts to make life better for others’

- SHEILA FITZGERALD

“I ALWAYS loved being able to make things better for people, that’s what community is all about and that’s why I loved working here so much.”

That’s Nora Murphy, addressing work colleagues, family members, and friends at a get together in her honour to mark her retirement from Rathmore Credit Union after almost 30 years of service.

“I’ve been so privileged to have been part of a group that is so much more than friends, we’ve gone through a lot together, and they were always there to support me through tough times,” Nora added.

Board of directors member Mick Long commended Nora on her outstanding contribution to the credit union and said that her volunteer work was also second to none. “We’re here to mark the end of a chapter in Nora’s working life and to congratulate her on her diligence, efficiency, and her constant efforts to make life better for others,” Mick said.

Nora’s involvement with the credit union began when she became a volunteer teller at the Gneeveguilla sub-office. Subsequently, she was elected to the board of directors in 1990, where she served as secretary for a number of years prior to being appointed to the staff in 1996.

It was during her tenure as secretary that Rathmore Credit Union won the Irish League of Credit Unions’ Credit Union Cup, in 1996, a national award recognising the credit union’s commitment to service and community development.
