Kanturk out in force to welcome Féile participants as friendships are forged

- BY MARIA HERLIHY

THERE were high spirits in Kanturk over the weekend as over 1,000 people made their way into the town and celebrated Feile.

There were games held on Friday night which was followed by a very sociable BBQ and then some presentations to both girls and boys teams.

On Saturday morning, both clubs played their hosts and as Padraig Breen, one of the organisers of Feile remarked, a lot of good friendships were made and there was even talk of further games being held down the line.

“Totally, in the meaning of Feile, it’s not all about games that are won but it’s about the friendships and the sociable aspect not just for the players but equally so for their parents and family members who turned up to support the teams,” he said.

What was certainly the highlight was the parade on Saturday which featured over 33 teams and Newmarket Pipe Band along with one UK visiting team. There was a great atmosphere during the parade and thankfully there wasn’t any rain.

The evening was finished off with a ‘Lark in the Park’ where a disco and BBQ was held. It also meant that everyone who had worked so hard could kick back and finally relax after a job truly well done.

“One great aspect about Feile in Kanturk was the huge combined effort from lots of organisations such as the Kanturk Community Council, Kanturk Chamber of Commerce, Kanturk GAA, Kanturk Ladies Football team, Kanturk Soccer club, and Kanturk Rugby club along with a host of businesses all helped out,” he said.

Mr Breen said that the event would not have been such a success without everyone rolling up their sleeves and helping out.

“It really shows what you can achieve with a combined effort and hopefully this will lead to further projects,” he said.
