FÉILE 2016

Last weekend the Ladies Club welcomed Clonguish Ladies from Longford and the Juvenile Club welcomed Boyle GAA from Roscommon for Féile 2016. The guests arrived on Friday afternoon, greeted by local club members and offered refreshments before the children were allocated to local club families who were hosting them. After a quick turnaround at the hosts’ homes, the girls team headed to Kanturk to play Tourlestrane Sligo and Kanturk (winning both), while the boys played Corralstown/Kinnegad and Kanturk at home.

The matches were followed by a Barbecue at the Kilshannig grounds, including music by DJ Lyonsie. All four teams and supporters mixed and mingled, in an evening that included a flash mob dance by the Longford girls. Before the evening ended, Juvenile Chairman Paudie Murphy and Ladies Chairman Pascal Ring made presentations to the visiting clubs, who in turn, presented beautiful gifts to the Kilshannig community.

Saturday morning saw home matches between both teams and their guests, before the girls headed off to Millstreet and the boys headed to Dromcollogher for their quarter finals. The host teams did not progress at this stage, but the community were thrilled that the visiting clubs both progressed to the semi-final stage.

Saturday evening saw both teams and visitors march with pride in the Kanturk Féile Parade, and enjoy the party in the park afterwards.

On Sunday morning it was time to say goodbye to the new friends, as the Longford girls had their semi-final in Mallow and the Roscommon boys had their semi-final in Tralee. Neither team won their semi-final and so that was the end of the road for us in Kilshannig for Féile 2016. The clubs were delighted that our friends in RGU Downpatrick did win the Ladies Division three final.

As a Club, we have so many to thank – first and foremost, we thank the under-14 girls and boys, who conducted themselves so well over the weekend as they played football and made new friends. We are very proud of you. Thank you to the committee of Kilshannig GAA who were so accommodating to the needs of all teams, with the pitches in tip top condition, goal nets, flags, clean changing rooms and help with parking.

Thank you to the committees and Féile Coordinators of the Ladies Club and Juvenile Club. Thank you to those who baked, make sandwiches, served food, cleaned up, drove, hung signs, helped with litter and road safety. Thank you to those who provided their barbecues and their cooking skill to serve over 180 people at our barbecue. Thank you to the parents who hosted the visiting teams, welcoming them into their homes and treating them like family.

And lastly, to the kind sponsors; The Cronins of Bweeng Post Office, Mallow Travel, John Callaghan of Dromahane transport, Commercial Vehicle Components Ltd, Mullane Builders, Olde Reliable Pub Glantane, County Lord Mayor John Paul O’Shea, Hibernian Hotel and Leisure Centre, Chadwicks Mallow, Burtons Kanturk, Maxol, McMahon Builders, Gortroe Inn, Singletons SuperValu, Hammonds Coaches and DaNumbers SuperValu.

Well done to our under-eights and under-10s who did a guard of honour for the Mourneabbey Seniors and North Cork Seniors, who played on the beautiful new pitch surface in Kilshannig this week – the first Ladies’ Football game to be played since the reopening.

Serious Support – Shopping in Lidl Supermarket? You’ll be given a nomination form (or two) at the till (you may have to request one). Please vote for Kilshannig Ladies for us to win €1,000 for our players. Tell your friends and relations.

Fixtures and Results – A quiet week this week due to Féile, but please check out Facebook and Twitter for up to date fixtures and results.

Sympathy – The club was very sad to hear of the passing of Deirdre Ludgate this week. Our thoughts are with our member Shauna, and her family Andrew, Aaron and David. As a mark of respect the Irish flag was at half mast, and there was a minutes silence before all of the Kilshannig girls and boys Féile games. RIP.
