Man dies after Mallow traffic accident
GARDAÍ have issued an appeal for witnesses to a horrific early morning crash near Mallow last Monday in which a man lost his life.
The fatal collision occurred at shortly before 4.30am on the N72 road at Longueville, Eden Hill.
The man, a foreign national who had been living and working in the Mallow area for a number of years, was the sole occupant of a car that was travelling in the Mallow direction when it was involved in a headon collision with a horse truck.
Emergency services including local Gardaí, HSE ambulances and fire brigade units from both Mallow and Kanturk were tasked to the incident and were on the scene within minutes.
The diver of the car, who was in his 30’s, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body taken to the Cork University Hospital (CUH) for a post mortem.
It is understood the horse truck had recently arrived in the country from the UK and was on its way to Millstreet for an equine event. The driver and another passenger received non-life threatening injuries in the crash and were taken to the CUH for treatment. A passenger traveling in the rear of the truck was uninjured.
The road was closed for a number of hours and diversions out in place while Gardaí undertook a forensic examination of the scene as part of their investigation into the cause of the crash.
A spokesman for the Mallow fire service said he and his colleagues offered their sympathies to the family of the man who died in the accident.
Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information pertaining to the incident to contact them in Mallow on 022 31450 or the Garda confidential line on 1800 666111.
