Living Space Project to bring carnival atmosphere to Mallow

- BILL BROWNE

WITH forecasters predicting good weather this weekend the public have been issued with an open invitation to enjoy some ‘fun in the sun’ in Mallow on Saturday.

The first day of the Living Space Project will see the town transformed in a virtual open-air carnival with a plethora of exciting family-friendly arts focussed events taking place across the town during the day.

The Project, a Cork County Council funded initiative organised by Cork County Arts, will incorporate four days of events during July and August aimed at “enlivening” the public spaces in the town.

Next Saturday’s programme will kick off at 1pm with ‘Communi-gate’, a performance installation by Rob Ireson that will run until 6pm in the Thomas Davis Plaza. Rob will disrupt the daily flow on the plaza to create a dedicated space for discussion, debate and reflection.

The nearby Mallow Library will host ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and ‘ The Gruffalo’ puppet shows for the little ones at 1pm and 2pm respectively with the venue hosting the hilarious family show ‘ Tallest Smallest Circus’ at 3.30pm.

The talented actors from the Lightbulb Youth Theatre will hold performances of their play ‘Backseat’ outside the Mallow Town Hall at 1pm, 3pm and 4.30pm. Using four parked cars, they will take audiences on a unique journey through the lives, trials and tribulations of eight teenagers.

The ‘Circus Outside The Box’ aerial show will thrill visitors with performances in the grounds of St Mary’s Church at 2pm and 4.30pm, with stilt walkers Ms Peggy and the BFG strolling down Thomas Davis Street throughout the day.

The young musicians at the Mallow CDYS will present a live session at the Market Square from 3pm – 6pm featuring local bands including Run Down Washington Street and the Rich City Vultures and singers including Voice of Ireland star Shannon Murphy.

Organisers will also be running a photography competition over the course of the four Saturdays of the Living Space Project (July 16 & 23 and August 7 & 14). The competition is open to all with entrants asked to submit a maximum of 10 photographs taken over the course of the events to livingspacemallow@gmail.com.

A selection of winning photographs will be exhibited at Mallow Library in September.
