- JOHN TARRANT

THE 26th annual Banteer Horticultural Show - combining Country Markets and Family Fun Day - promises to be bigger and better on this Sunday.

Many established shows fell by the wayside but the personnel behind the Banteer staging are keeping alive the spirit in a hosting in the spacious Banteer Community Centre.

Banteer Show continues to grow, contributing to its success are a dedicated and energetic voluntary organising committee working tirelessly to string a comprehensive 69 class programme of events together.

Entries for the Dog Show will be taken on the day and judging of this competition commences at 2pm sharp. The dog show supports Pauline’s Rescue, a dog and horse rescue group based in Milford.

Horticultural enthusiasts are well catered from potatoes to carrots and rhubarb with potted plants, roses, confectionary to arts and crafts satisfying the interests of exhibitors expected from all over the South West Region. Elsewhere are classes for baking, needlework, photography, arts and crafts.

Art will focus on “Euro 2016” or “Ireland in 1916” with the Country Market section is made possible by generous contributions from members of the community. Donations of homemade cakes, confectionery and preserves can be handed into Banteer Community Centre on Sunday morning.

There is a special offer on multiple entries in adult classes, the normal fee of €3 per entry is replaced with a special offer of four entries for €10. It is hoped that this will encourage entries and result in a bigger and brighter array of produce and crafts on the day.

There will be numerous side shows on the day including the 30 ft high Spider Climber, Bouncing Castle, Super Slide, Face Painting, Balloon Modeling, Kiddies Disco, Pedal Cars, Pony Rides, Horseshoe Throwing, Penalty Shootout and much more.

Entry forms are available at Banteer Post Office. Entries, accompanied by fees, can be handed into Banteer Post Office or sent to Juliet O’ Donoghue, Cois Doire, Banteer West, Banteer, phone (029) 56944.

Also included in the programme is a 5km road race co-ordinated by Duhallow AC, registration for the race will commence at 11.30am at Banteer Astro Turf and the race will start at 12.30pm.
