Junior A Football Championship – Kilshannig 1-17 Kilworth 1-05: Kilshannig advanced to the penultimate stage of the North Cork Junior A Football following a deserving quarter final victory over Kilworth at Kildorrery on Friday evening last. Kilshannig ran out convincing 12 point winners but they didn’t have it all their own way with little separating the sides for the majority of the contest.

Kilworth played with the assistance of a strong breeze in the opening half and while Michael Twomey opened the scoring for Kilshannig, Kilworth got off to a perfect start when Brian Sheehan goaled in the fourth minute. They should have extended their lead but spurned a number of excellent scoring opportunities. Kilshannig struggled against the elements but they did manage to peg their opponents back and points from Killian O’Hanlon and the excellent Cillian Murphy had them ahead after the first quarter, 0-4 to 1-0. The closing stages of the half saw the sides trade scores before a late Kilworth free ensured parity at the half time whistle, 0-5 to 1-2.

The game continued in a similar pattern after the resumption with both teams adding a point each but Kilshannig began to dominate through Murphy and O’Hanlon at midfield with Roddy O’Mahony, Brian Guerin and Damien Murphy also making their presence felt. Jack Kearney, Pa Cronin and Tadhg O’Sullivan all pointed to move Kilshannig into a three point lead entering the final 10 minutes, 0-11 to 1-05. Kilshannig suffered a significant blow, however, with the dismissal of Cronin for a second yellow. Kilworth, though, failed to score for the remainder of the game with Kilshannig completely dominating in the closing stages. They added a further 1-6 without reply, substitute Frank McCarthy finding the net, to confirm their place in the semi-finals against Ballyclough or Liscarroll.

WEDDING OF THE YEAR:

When Angie proposed to Gene on February 29 (Leap Year), little did they realise what a resounding success their ‘Mock Wedding’ would be. It took place on Saturday July 2 in sun drenched Clondrohid at the Bell Inn. It was open invitation and a large crowd from far and near turned out to witness this event. All funds raised are for the local Macroom Hosp and St. Colmans House.

The bride, the groom, bridesmaids and best men, the parents of the bride and groom all looked elegant in their finery. All work was done voluntarily, with the locals preparing and serving food supplied by Healys. The photographer, video man, flower arranger, Franc, and taxi man all played their part. The music was excellent and the dancing and craic went on late into the night. As, no doubt, a video will be available, to raise more funds, it is best to keep you in suspense as to who was who and what was what. The speeches were outstanding. Well done on a brilliant night.
