GAA MATCH REPORT

On July 5 in Castletownroche, we exited the Avondhu Junior Football championship after being beaten by Fermoy on a final score of 1-10 to 0-08 where recent injuries to key players was acutely felt.

We started in whirlwind fashion and had the opening four points of the game. Dave Brosnan scored a free in the second minute, and Barry Murphy tacked on a point in the fifth. We had settled well at the back, with the debutant Lucas Sheahan looking very accomplished in his half back berth. Dave Brosnan got the third point before Billy Norris got the forth, on the 11th minute after good work from Ian O’Gorman. Colm O’Connell was fetching a lot of ball at this stage in midfield and we had a good supply of ball going into our forwards. Paul O’Sullivan was linking up well, and the omens were positive. Fermoy got their opening score on the 16th minute but we responded quickly with a nice Liam Cronin point in the very next minute.

Dave Brosnan scored the next score on the 23rd minute mark, but the most significant score of the game came next for Fermoy. Pádraig De Roiste became very influential in midfield for Fermoy and this intermediate grade player, but injured for Fermoy’s opening game, will not be playing much longer at this grade ran through the heart of the Killavullen defence and scored a very important goal for his club. It brought Fermoy right back into the game, and they scored the final point of the first half in the 27th minute. Killavullen having had the lion’s share of possession went in at the break only one point to the fore and after six poor wides, the confidence began to seep out of the team.

On the resumption Fermoy’s other midfielder, the young Rory McEvoy became very prominent and their midfield duo exerted a huge influence on the game. This player equalised in the third minute of the half, and Fermoy went on a scoring blitz between the fifth and 17th minute to go four points to the front. We simply could not shake off the shackles of their tight marking backs, and they got numerous hands in, to block our attempted shots before Pa Egan got a rather fortunate point from an acute angle on the 18th minute of the game. It looked wide but was waved over the bar by the umpire bearing the white flag.

That we went 25 minutes without scoring was very telling. Fermoy scored the next three points before Declan Cronin scored a point for us when their goalie saved his goal bound shot. The game petered out rather tamely to the end and Fermoy advance to the semi-final against Mallow.

On a night of huge frustrations, Kevin Fox, John O’Regan, Lucas Sheahan, Colm O’Connell, Seán O’Regan and Billy Norris can be proud of their endeavours. All the hard graft put in, by the back ground team of Redmond, Tommy and Kevin with our coach Cathal is only to be applauded but it was not to be.

The team and those that scored were as follows; Michael Cronin, Gearoid Sheahan, Kevin Fox, David Roche, Pa Egan (0-01), John O’Regan, Lucas Sheahan, Seán O’Regan, Colm O’Connell, Ian O’Gorman, Billy Norris, Paul O’Sullivan, Liam Cronin ((0-01), David Brosnan (003, 0-01F) and Barry Murphy (001). Substitutes: Barthly Hayes for Paul O’Sullivan and Declan Cronin (0-01) for Barry Murphy.
