Sharks go scouting for the Phoenix
SINCE Mallow Scout Group reopened in 2008 it has grown from strength to strength with currently over 140 youth members and over 35 adult volunteers.
The group is made up of four sections: Beavers aged 6 to 9 years old, Cubs aged 9 to11 years old, Scouts 12 to 15 years old and Ventures aged 15 to 18 years old. All of the sections are extremely active but one patrol has had a very busy summer indeed.
Shark Patrol from the Scout section are going to The Phoenix this Thursday which is a national competition which will this year be held in Mount Mellery Scout Centre. With approximately 100 patrols competing for the prize of the Phoenix Trophy from all over the country, north and south, it promises to be a fantastic event.
This is extra special for Mallow - this is the first time Mallow has qualified for the Phoenix since reopening, so they are very excited.
During the four day event the patrols will be challenged in the pioneering skills - making camp with all the gadgets that will provide them with comfort and shelter over the coming days, backwoods, orienteering, first aid skills and lots more as well as making new friends from all over the country with trade fairs, games and, of course, the one thing that Scouts are known for - the campfire with songs and sketches.
Mallow and friends from Fermoy, Charleville and Mitchelstown will all make up the North Cork contingent.
Wishing the best to all involved but especially to the Mallow Shark Patrol, whose members are Emer O’Grady (patrol leader), Jane O’Connell (assistant patrol leader), Mark Barry (quartermaster), Alice O’Sullivan (scribe), Shauna McDonnell (cook), Cian Murphy (fire warden) Clare Linehan (Facebooker) and Tim McCarthy (first aider).
