Mitchelsto­wn settle down to ease past Mayfield

MITCHELSTO­WN Intermedia­te footballer­s after a shaky start in their game with Mayfield on Saturday emerged very easy winners in the end.

The City side got the perfect start and three early points by Maurice Barry, Paul Condon and David O’Neill gave them a decided advantage. Michael Walsh pointed for ‘Town. Further Mayfield pressure yielded a good point by Maurice Barry with Nicky Kelly setting up Paul Condon for a fine point that opened up a lead 0-5 to 0-1.

Mitchelsto­wn regrouped well. Sean Walsh impressed at midfield with his high fielding giving his side much hope. In the 19th minute Michael Walsh pointed a free. Good play by Stephen Fox led to a foul on Dylan Reidy-Price with James Sheehan pointing the free.

Shane Cahill fetched a high ball and with confidence soloed through for a great point. In the 27th minute a foul on Shane Cahill produced an equalising pointed free by Michael Walsh 0-5 each at the interval.

On the changeover Sean Walsh cut through only to be denied a good goal scoring chance by Mayfield keeper Eolan Bond. Jason Cott edged the Avondhu side in front. Good play for Mayfield by Paul Condon and Nicky Kelly led to a very good Maurice Barry point 0-6 each.

The City side hit the front once more when Shane Kelly placed Paul Condon for a point. James Sheehan levelled for the third and last time in the 39th minute. ‘Town took complete control.

They won the midfield battle and a goal by Laurance O’Flynn after a four man movement set them on their way. Sean O’Sullivan and Jason Cott combined well for Michael Walsh to score a massive point off the crossbar.

In the 42nd minute Stephen Fox and Greg Carroll worked well for Michael Walsh for another point. Walsh pointed two frees as the winners were double scores ahead entering the final quarter 1- 11 to 0- 7.

The second goal came in the 47th minute when Shane Cahill put Jason Cott through who goaled from close range. Dylan Reidy-Price added a good point with Mayfield having a point by Darren Hayes.

Sean Walsh put Sean O’Sullivan through for a great point before Mayfield had a point by impressive David O’Neill after good play by Barry Hegarty. Mitchelsto­wn completed the scoring with Michael Walsh kicking his eighth point in the 61st minute.

Mitchelsto­wn now await either Glanworth or Bandon in the quarter-final.
