Members of the public share their ideas for inclusion in the Mallow Public Realm Plan
ALMOST 240 members of the public have responded to a survey seeking their views on arguably the most progressive and comprehensive development plan ever proposed for Mallow town.
The need for a dedicated Mallow Urban Public Realm Plan arose from the Mallow Development Partnership’s (MDP) submission in relation to Cork County Council’s Mallow Local Area Plan (LAP) 2016-2022.
It aims to build on the success of projects already undertaken in the town, including the Thomas Davis Plaza, the flood relief scheme and works at Mallow Castle.
The draft plan contained a number of ambitious proposals including the creation of a new ‘ town square’ at St Mary’s Church and transforming the Park Road into a continental-style boulevard.
People were given the opportunity to view the proposals at an open night earlier this month in addition to replying to the 18-question online survey in which they answered questions about issues including the quality of life in Mallow, potential town centre improvements and the economic vibrancy of the town.
“Probably one of the more important elements in the process has been the high level of public input and consultation that has taken place,” said an MDP spokesperson.
A total of 238 responded to the online survey, with their responses touching on a number of areas of concern.
These included prioritising aesthetic improvements to the Main Street, addressing the lack of living space and parking in the town and the presence of derelict buildings.
People also called for greater pedestrian facilities and greater access to public and sporting facilities though the development of dedicated pathways with wheelchair accessibility.
Security and the sense of safety was also an issue of great concern, which many felt could be addressed by the installation of more CCTV cameras.
The MDP spokesperson said these concerns would be considered when the definitive plan is drawn up.
“Observations and concerns arising from the widespread public consultations are being taken on board. The final document will then be submitted to Cork County Council for consideration.”
