Clyda’s junior hurlers met Ballygiblin in the next instalment of the North Cork Junior A hurling championship. The game was played in Carrigoon in Mallows GAA Complex on a very grey misty evening. Ballygiblin opened the scoring with a point from a free before James Buckley equalised for Clyda after four minutes. MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Clyda Rovers 3-13 Kildorrery 2-16. Clyda’s second round of the Minor Hurling Championship took place in Killavullen last Thursday on a pleasant evening. This was a game that could have gone either way but a draw was probably a fair result on the evening despite some great work from the Clyda men. Kildorrery got the opening score but Clyda reacted positively with three points in quick succession.

A long run up the field by Matthew McEntee was rewarded with a point, then William Cronin scored a free after Adam Walsh was fouled and Dylan Flanagan winning the ball in the full forward position moved it out quickly to William who converted his second.

Kildorrery didn’t take long to respond and did so with a goal. Clyda reacted well again with another three points two of those coming from David Walsh who was operating on the wing and another from William Cronin from another free. The next segment of the game saw Kildorrery dominate and they scored five points without reply.

David Walsh struck again before Ben O’Connor opened up the Kildorrery defence and his shot had the keeper beaten but Dylan Flanagan was on hand to ensure it found the net. Seán O’Shea was then called to action and he pulled off a brilliant save only for a Kildorrery defender to pick up the rebound but Daniel Fitzpatrick was on hand to force the Kildorrery man in to conceding a free. B

oth sides added two more points before the break Clyda’s coming from the ever impressive David Walsh and another fine free by William Cronin. Clyda leading at the break with a solitary point on a score line of 1-9 to 1-8.

Matthew McEntee got his second of the game straight after the break when a short pass from Colin Kelly found him and Matthew scored from long range.

Ben O’Connor then added another to his tally. Then both sides added another point, Clydas via a free from William Cronin however this was to be the last from Clyda for a long period as Kildorrery raised their performance and scored a whopping 1-5 without reply.

Four of those points coming from frees. Clyda had witnessed a three point lead become a five point deficit. At this stage with approximately 10 minutes left on the clock it was looking bleak for the Clyda men but that was before Seán O’Callaghan gave Clyda some hope when his shot hit the back of the net.

A quick taken free by Eamonn Doherty to Colin Kelly saw Colin get his first score of the evening to close the gap to a solitary point. Kildorrery added another via a free and with the seconds ticking away on the clock Clyda won a free around the half way mark. Colin Kelly dropped it into the melting pot and Dominic Cronin fooled everyone as the sliotar looked like it was heading wide it dropped into the top corner of the net.

Kildorrery managed to pull level with a late point and while both sides had chances to win it, it was destined for extra time. However, it was deemed too dark to play it on the night. The game ended with it all to play for on a score line of Clyda Rovers 3-13 to Kildorrery 2-16.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

Clyda Rovers 10-6 St Kevin’s 2-6. Our under-13 footballers recorded a fantastic victory over St Kevin’s in the North Cork League Final on Sunday night last in Glantane. St Kevin’s were the better team in the opening 10 minutes, getting two quick goals. However, Clyda responded well with scores from Cian Walsh, Cormac O’Reilly, Mikey Corbett, Ben Nyhan and David Cooney. The backs were outstanding ably led by Kevin Graham, Gary Deane and Darragh Walsh.

At the shirt whistle little separated the sides but upon the resumption Clyda showed their superiority and excelled with further scores from Rowan Doherty, Mikey Corbett, Ben Nyhan, Niall Daly and Darragh Lawlee. Clyda were too strong for St Kevin’s on the night. Rowan Doherty who led by example on the pitch accepted the cup on behalf of the team.
