Linda’s family say heartfelt ‘thank you’

- BILL BROWNE

THE memory of a young Ballyclough woman who tragically passed away earlier this year will be recalled through a series of fundraising memorial events taking place over the coming month.

On May 24 the sad news that Linda Glassett-Brosnan had passed away at the CUH following a short but intense battle with cancer, shocked the tightly knit parish of Ballyclough and the wider community.

Linda (37) would also have been known to many people in Mallow having worked for Sean Hennessey Electrical and the Mallow Day Care Centre.

Such was the high level of care and attention Linda received during her short illness her family have decided to say a heartfelt ‘ thank you’ in the best possible way, organising as series of fundraising events for the Oncology Department at the CUH and the Marymount Hospice.

The first of these, a memorial cycle will take place on Saturday, September 17 staring in Ballyclough, with organisers setting down 85km and 30km routes for the event. Registration will take place at 8am in the Ballyclough Community Centre and entry will be €20 per person.

On Friday, September 23 Deady’s bar in Ballyclough will host a table quiz at 10pm. The entrance fee will be €40 per table with spot prizes on the night.

The following night the flame of one of Linda’s great passions will be relit at a darts tournament taking place in Fitzgerald’s Bar, Ballyclough from 7pm.

Breda Glassett said that darts was just one of the many interests her sister had during her tragically short life.

“Linda was a well loved girl and her bubbly personality endeared her to all. She would do whatever she could for anyone who asked her and the respect in which she was held by so many people was proven by the large turnout at her removal and funeral,” said Breda.

“A huge GAA fan, Linda loved nothing better than to follow her native Cork county, despite the fact that her husband David was a Kerry supporter. She was also a fervent supporter of Ballyclough and at matches you would always hear her words of support and encouragement,” she added.

Breda said her sister was also a “formidable darts player” playing on the Fitzgerald’s Bar team and a big coursing fan having been introduced to the sport by their father Billy.

“When the day’s coursing was over Linda would regale people with her fantastic singing voice. We have no doubt but that she will leading the chorus at the great pub in the sky to ‘Simply the Best’, her favourite song,” she said.

Breda said that they hoped the memorial events would be a celebration of Linda’s “bubbly and generous” personality.

“As well as remembering Linda, these events are a way for us as a family to say thank you to the people who cared for Linda during her illness and to raise money so that they can continue their amazing work.”
