GETTING ‘DOWN AND DIRTY’ IN RATHCORMAC
HUNDREDS of hardy thrill seekers are set to get ‘down and dirty’ in Rathcormac on Sunday, September 10 for the second annual outing of the 5km Mud Run.
The run will see individuals and teams take on a specially designed course spread out around the surrounding countryside that will see participants travelled along, and at some points during the trek across the River Bride.
Along the way they will be challenged with overcoming a weird and wonderful array of lung-bursting obstacles that will test their limits of fitness to the limit.
Organisers have spent the past few weeks designing the course that will see competitors climbing, crawling and clambering over more than 50 obstacles as well as wading through spectacular waist-high water features
Of course the main ingredient of the day will be plenty of energy sapping mud, ensuring that competitors will be covered from head-to-toe in the brown stuff by the time they cross the finish line.
More than 420 people took part in last year’s inaugural run, with the monies raised going to help cover the cost of treatment for a local girl stricken by Lyme Disease.
Organisers expect that number to grow this year, with proceeds going to the Children’s Unit at the CUH and the Rathcormac & Bartlemy Parents Association’s
You may want to ask yourself why exactly would you put yourself through all of that? Not an entirely unreasonable question given the likely conditions on the day.
“The real question you should be asking is why not? The mud will wash of but the memories will live a lifetime. On top of that it is all in the name of some very deserving causes,” said a spokesperson.
“You can do the course at your own pace, even skipping some of the obstacles if you want. It’s not a race and people of all fitness levels over the age of 15 can take part. You can complete the course in one hour of three hours, that is up to each person how they wish to take on the course.”
People are advised to wear suitable clothing on the day and separate male and female changing areas and showers will provided to rinse the muck off.
“Spectators are also welcome to come along, enjoy the spectacle and maybe even donate a some money on the day,” said the spokesperson.
The entry fee will be €25 for minors and €35 for adults with a team rate of €30 per person with online at www. eventbrite.ie.
