Write you way to a new career at Mallow College

- BILL BROWNE

HAVE you ever wondered what goes on behind the headlines, how the news is created and what it takes to make a good news story?

An adult night course currently being offered at the Mallow College of Education is set to open up the media world to aspiring journalists and those with a keen interest in current affairs.

The 10-week journalism course, certified by the Irish Academy of Public Relations, will take an in-depth look at various aspects of the media under the tutelage of an experienced journalist.

Successful completion will allow people to pursue a career in print, radio or online journalism, compile newsletters or pamphlets for their own clubs or organisations or explore promotion avenues within their existing jobs.

The course will cover a diverse range of topics offering participants the chance to learn about the media drawing from the experiences of the course tutor.

Subjects addressed will include how the media works, ethics, use of language, news reporting, feature writing and law.

They will also be tutored in interview skills and the compilation and editing of newsletters and pamphlets.

A comprehensive set of notes will be given to students each week building up to a useful reference guide that can be used after the course has been completed.

Students will have the option of sitting an exam at the end of the course certified by the Irish Academy of Public Relations.

The fee for the course will be €130, with exam fees extra

An open enrolment and information night will take place at Mallow College, West End, Annabella next Monday evening from 7.30pm9pm where the course tutor will be on hand to answer any questions relating to the course.
