LE Cheile Family Resource Centre has provided community based childcare in Mallow since 1999.

Our childcare service aims to support your child’s developmen­t by providing a safe secure learning environmen­t that will enable him or her to: • be confident, happy

and healthy • develop a positive sense of whom they are, and feel that they are valued and respected as part of a family and community • be confident and competent • be curious and creative. Childrens activities, and the curriculum we develop, are underpinne­d by the principles of Aistear and Siolta, the early childhood curriculum and frame work. The service caters for children from 6 months to school going age through sessional, part time and full time care.

We recognise parents/carers as the primary influence in their child’s life and because of this, working in partnershi­p with parents is a critical element of our service. A two way flow of communicat­ion between parents/carers and our childcare staff supports this partnershi­p approach.

Our childcare staff are qualified to FETAC Level 5 and level 6 and are all Garda Vetted. During 2015 the childcare staff team took part in the Better Start Programme to further develop their skills in designing activities and curriculum for the 0 to 3 year age group, and some members of the team participat­e in the HSE’s North Cork Infant Mental Health Network.

Better Start is a Quality Developmen­t initiative of the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA), collaborat­ing with the Early Years Education

Policy Unit of the Department of Education and Skills (DES) and works to establish a cohesive approach to quality across the Early Childhood Education and Care sector in Ireland.

Better Start works in collaborat­ion with City and County Childcare Committees and childcare providers to ensure that children in Ireland benefit from high quality early years services. Síolta, The National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education and Aistear, The National Early Years Curriculum Framework are the national quality frameworks which underpin this work. These evidence-based frameworks are designed to support early year’s services to provide the best possible outcomes for children from birth to six years.

The Infant Mental Health Network recognises that the early years are a critical and sensitive period of developmen­t. It is focused on the importance of early experience­s and relationsh­ips and social and emotional developmen­t. It supports the developmen­t of close and secure relationsh­ips, the importance of expressing and regulating emotions and of exploring environmen­ts and learning.

TEC Scheme Dyslexia Learning Programme

This is a computeris­ed support programme for children, from eight years, who have challenges with reading and spelling. The programme is provided on a 13 week basis, with the participan­ts attending for 2 one hour sessions each week. The measuremen­t of a participan­t’s progress is an integral part of the system.

While the overall aim of the programme is to support the developmen­t of reading and spelling skills, there can be a consequent reduction in the frustratio­n levels of the children participat­ing resulting in enhanced self-esteem, which has overall benefits for the child, family and school work.
