CEMETERY TOUR

The Kilshannig Cemetery Tour took place last Sunday evening and over 150 people turned up which was more than double the expected turnout and the fine evening was obviously a great help.

People expressed surprise that such a small plot of ground could contain so much history and were amazed with the artistry of stone cutters of bygone days as expressed by the iconography on many old headstone going back over 300 years. The headstone rubbings on display were very much appreciated as was the visit inside the old Protestant Church. The recorded photos and inscriptions on all of the headstones in the cemetery are available on the website’ historicgraves.com’

BALLYHOOLY 1-20 KILSHANNIG 1-16: Kilshannig’s North Cork Junior A Hurling Championship hopes ended in disappointment following a quarter final defeat to Ballyhooly at Killavullen last Friday evening. It was a tie that Kilshannig were well in contention but a poor second half display proved costly after they failed to build on a three point half time lead. While the excellent Kevin O’Flynn opened the scoring, it was Ballyhooly who got off to a blistering start with seven unanswered points to surge 0-7 to 0-1 ahead by the 10th minute. However, Kilshannig came storming back with Liam Casey, Roddy O’Mahony and O’Flynn closing the deficit before O’Flynn, who caused havoc in the opposition defence, moved his side in front with a superb goal. The sides traded points before the break with Tadhg O’Sullivan and O’Flynn once more on target to give their side a 1-11 to 0-11 interval lead.

While Kilshannig extended their advantage to four after the restart, they suffered a significant blow when Ballyhooly struck the net to cut the lead to one. They had all the momentum at this stage and quickly drew level before further points moved them two in front, 1-16 to 1-14. Kilshannig managed to keep in touch but Ballyhooly were in control in most sectors and dominating possession in defence and midfield. Their dominance in the second period eventually began to tell in the final 10 minutes as they opened up a five point lead as the game entered injury time. Kilshannig fought hard and kept going to the end but they failed to find a much needed goal as all they could muster was a late point from Trevor O’Regan.

It was a superb game of hurling that could have gone either way but in the end Kilshannig just about held out to set up a final meeting with Ballygiblin. While Cuchulainns raced into a six point lead after 10 minutes, Kilshannig regrouped well and overturned the deficit to lead 1-10 to 1-08 at the break, Jack Kearney with the goal.

The second half provided more drama as Cuchulainns retook the lead with two quick goals to move three ahead, 3-10 to 1-13. Kilshannig, though. responded in emphatic fashion as Conor McMahon’s 40th minute goal brought the sides level once more before he set up Diarmuid O’Sullivan who finished to the net to put his side two in front with 10 minutes remaining. Kilshannig added further points to put four between the sides and despite a late Cuchulainns rally, they fell short by a solitary point as Kilshannig secured their final place.
