A lasting tribute to Rathmore’s 1916 heroes…
2016 has been a huge year, historically, across Kerry with every village and town resurrecting the seismic events of 100-years ago. But time passes quickly, and as memorable as these events undoubtedly are, the shifting sands of time can often relegate them to the distant chambers of memory. But not in Rathmore. This is a place where commemorating 1916 is to extend far beyond its centenary celebrations, thanks to community vision and endeavour. Rathmore Community Council, in conjunction with plenty of cross community support, decided to create a lasting legacy to 1916 through the creation of a wonderful garden of remembrance which is now complete at Ard Mhuire.
The official opening will take place in the coming weeks and this has really been a spirited project, instigated by Cllr Niall Kelliher, with Kerry County Council providing materials for the garden and Denis O’Brien of Banebridge Construction carrying out the ground works. But it was the people of Rathmore who got stuck into the project from day one with the care and consideration that reflected their pride in the part Rathmore played in the story of 1916.
“This was a very enjoyable project and once the community pulled together we made light work of it. It’s a perfect area for it and there were many Rathmore men involved in 1916 and subsequent War of Independence. Maybe down the road we’ll put some benches there so people can make it more of a focal point. This commemorative garden is also great insofar as once the centenary has ended, we’ll still have the garden for years to come,” said Brian Kelly.
Rathmore and near neighbour Glenflesk also stole the show this year with its dynamic and innovative production of ‘Patrick’; a musical play written by local man Aidan O’Connor. The play tells the story of Rathmore’s Cpt. Patrick O’Connor and his amazing and emotional journey during 1916. From the moment the curtains first opened to a packed Rathmore community hall back in April, the cast had the audience captivated with a personal and emotional portrayal of Cpt. O’Connor’s life from Rathmore to the GPO. ‘Patrick’ later went on to work its magic at the INEC and the team are now to receive a Civic Reception in September with more shows expected in the autumn.
