Credit union splashes the cash to make going to third level easier
SIX students from Mid Cork are heading off to college this week with €1,000 in their bank pockets, thanks to Macroom Credit Union.
The Board and management of Macroom Credit Union announced last May that it would present six bursaries of €1,000 to a Leaving Certificate student from each of the secondary schools in their catchment area. At the Castle Hotel in Macroom last week, presentations were made to the winners and their bursaries were presented to them. The winners were drawn from a hat which was overseen by board members of the Credit Union and the school principals in attendance.
The lucky winners were Ann Cronin – McEgan College; Katie O’Sullivan – Coachford College; Sorcha O’Sullivan – Scoil Mhuire Balligeary; Deirdre Ni Lionaird – Colaiste Ghobnatan; Conor Flanagan – De La Salle and Niamh Dineen – St Marys
While college had started for some of the winners, and they were unfortunately unable to attend, the prizes were collected by their parents or siblings on the night.
Macroom Credit Union was delighted with the response to the first year of these awards and fully intends to continue this bursary scheme for further years. The large turnout on the night was testament to the fact that further education is important in the community and our local students are investing time in their future.
The variety of third level courses that the applicants are attending highlights the vast differences in interests and career paths available, and shows that there is a path forward whatever your interests or aspirations are.
The credit union is a firm believer in investing in education and this bursary scheme is an endorsement of this belief. Meanwhile, the credit union also offers a discounted education loan rate for all education purposes in order to spread the education costs over a manageable time frame.
