DELIGHT AT SECURING LITTER CHALLENGE PREMIER PRIZE

-

MILLSTREET Tidy Towns Association earned the plaudits on securing first place in its category to the 2016 Anti Litter Challenge.

In doing so, Millstreet bettered last year’s runner up place to overcome stiff competition with Blarney and Skibbereen filling second and third positions respectively.

At a function in County Hall, Chairman of Cork County Council Cllr Seamus McGrath spoke of 114 communities participating in this year’s competition. “The council’s annual Anti Litter Challenge showcases the energy and dedication of the local communities in Cork County, and is a prime example of what can be achieved by a partnership approach between the council and the community”, he said.

Millstreet TTA PRO Áine Murphy expressed delight at the committed work and effort delivered by people on volunteering to support Millstreet’s efforts into this competition this year and their endeavours had really paid off.“This is a huge achievement for Millstreet and a testament to the community spirit of our fair town. We rely heavily on donations, sponsorship and grants to enable us to achieve many of the projects around town”, she said.

With so many international stagings in Millstreet over the summer, the town remained radiant and was rightly acknowledged by visitors on its cleanliness and warm welcome. Many projects are ongoing, including planting and water butts implemented in the past two years.

“None of these projects are possible without the help of the people of Millstreet, FÁS, Cork County Council and sponsors. There is a huge amount of work that is involved achieving a result like this and it takes a lot of volunteers and we would like to take this opportunity to applaud everybody involved”, said Áine.

Congratulations were extended to category winners Millstreet, Ballincollig, Crosshaven and Meelin.

Upcoming, Millstreet TTA have received an invitation to the Super Valu National Tidy Town Award Ceremony in the Helix, Dublin on Monday, September 26.

“Whilst we are not guaranteed an award merely by just receiving an invite I would hope that, at the very least, we will be receipt of acknowledgement of the effort that is being put into our town through the Millstreet Tidy Town Association”, said Áine.
